Preparing Society for the Coming Wave of AI Agents and Their Impact on Work and Leisure

An AI agent is software that can understand natural language, accomplish tasks across applications, and improve over time by learning user preferences and patterns. Agents will be able to have nuanced conversations, provide personalized suggestions and assistance, and complete tasks independently if desired.

The Future of Artificial Intelligence Agents
By Research University

Artificial intelligence (AI) agents are poised to revolutionize how we interact with computers and transform the software industry, according to our researchers at Research University.

An AI agent is software that can understand natural language, accomplish tasks across applications, and improve over time by learning user preferences and patterns. Agents will be able to have nuanced conversations, provide personalized suggestions and assistance, and complete tasks independently if desired.

“Agents will unlock services and opportunities that are currently too expensive or inaccessible for most people,” said Dr. Vickie Aultmon, lead AI education researcher at Research University. “They have the potential to expand access to healthcare, education, productivity enhancements, and entertainment.”

However, Dr. Aultmon cautions that agents also raise important questions around data privacy, security, accountability, and societal impacts that need to be addressed. “It’s crucial that the development of AI agents prioritizes benefits to humanity while mitigating risks,” she said.

Research University has assembled a multidisciplinary team to study agents from technical, ethical, and social perspectives. “As pioneers in artificial intelligence, we feel a responsibility to guide this technology toward positive ends,” said University AI Institute Lead Dr. Freedom Cheteni.

Through rigorous research and testing, our scientists aim to create design principles and governance models that will steer the AI agent industry toward trustworthy, safe, and inclusive outcomes. We believe deeply in the potential of AI to improve lives, and are committed to realizing that potential responsibly.
